Gutter tip: At the base of the downspouts, depending on the slope of the finished grade or lot, the builder may install extenders - hinged sections of pipe that extend the downspout mouth farther from the house and foundation. Or, the end of the down-spout may simply have a splash block, a wedge-shaped piece of cast concrete or rigid plastic that disperses runoff from the downspout and gutters above. Splash blocks may also be simply a bed of washed gravel at the base of a downspout.
